Veneers treatment

Anyone looking for a new, beautiful and natural smile cannot avoid the use of veneers. The veneers from Hollywood came in Germany several decades ago and continue to gain popularity.

And not without a reason, of course. The thin but very robust ceramic material ensures long durability and precise work, so that the wishes of each patient can be catered for.

Perhaps you have already studied the subject a bit, but are wondering how a veneer treatment actually works. In this article you will learn everything you need to know about the procedure.

Veneers treatment procedure

The insertion of veneers must be done with a lot of precision. This applies to the creation of the first mock-ups, the production in the laboratory and the bonding of the veneers. However, the procedure of a veneers treatment cannot be generalized so easily, as every doctor has a different approach. As a rule, the treatment extends over 2 – 5 appointments. So it’s best to make sure you find a doctor in your area.

The duration of the appointments depends, among other things, on the patient’s dental situation as well as the choice of the respective veneer type. The most commonly used veneers are conventional ceramic veneers. Therefore, this article deals with this type of veneers.

Veneers treatment is divided in many cases like this:

Next, you will find out what exactly happens during the individual appointments and what you need to be prepared for.

1st appointment: Discussion

The first appointment is very important. During it, you will get to know the doctor and the exact procedure of his practice. Before the appointment, you should ask yourself a few questions to find out if you are satisfied with the quality, professionalism of the practice and costs.

Remember, the veneers will probably be with you for the next twenty years. Find out in which laboratory the veneers are made and what material they are made of. Pure ceramic veneers assure you the highest quality. It is best to avoid plastic mixtures.

At the first appointment, the dentist will take a look at your teeth. In this context, an X-ray may be required. Usually, a scan and an impression are taken at the first appointment. It is important to find out how many teeth need veneers to achieve a natural smile. It is rather unusual that 2 veneers are enough, on average it is more like 6 – 8. This should be discussed individually with the doctor.

If you have decided to continue the treatment, appointment number 2 will be scheduled.

2nd appointment: preparation and fabrication of veneers

At the second appointment, a mock-up is made so that you can see approximately how you will look with veneers. It is not an exact representation of the veneers, but it gives an almost realistic insight into how you would look later with veneers. Here, there is often the option to make another interim appointment so you have time to reconsider.

But in most cases the next step is the grinding of the teeth. If you choose non-prep veneers, the finished veneers are bonded directly to the surface. With Lumineers, a certain type of non-prep veneers, the tooth does not need to be ground down. However, Ceranite veneers are not suitable for every patient.

When the teeth are ground down, a layer of the surface is removed. How much this is and how long it takes again depends very much on the patient himself. There are cases where grinding is not necessary even with conventional veneers. In others, however, several millimeters have to be ground off. If several teeth are ground, the process can take several hours.

After grinding, a new impression is made. This is for the dental laboratory that produces ceramic veneers. The production usually takes 1 – 2 weeks. During this time, in order to protect the ground teeth, the patient receives temporary veneers made of plastic. The temporary veneers do not look as natural as the permanent veneers, but hold the teeth securely for 1 – 2 weeks. The prepared teeth must be protected from hot and cold food.

3rd appointment: Sticking

Before the veneers are inserted, the doctor and patient check whether the color and shape of the veneers are suitable. Then the teeth are prepared. This means that they are cleaned so that the veneers can be bonded without any problems. Then the veneers are bonded using the adhesive technique. This can take 15-30 minutes per tooth.

Once all the veneers have been bonded, the patient is finished with the treatment. The first days and weeks there is a period of adaptation. This is followed by the final appointment.

Date 4: Control

After the adaptation phase, the veneers still need to be checked. The patient describes whether he or she is satisfied with the veneers and the doctor checks whether the treatment was successful or if any changes still need to be made. If everything is in order and the patient is satisfied, the control appointment is usually repeated twice a year.

This way the quality of the veneers is maintained and their durability is essentially prolonged. The patient is responsible for cleaning the teeth regularly.
