Veneers after 10 years
Once you’ve decided on veneers, the difference is nice to see, especially at first. The adjusted teeth are straight and shine in their new splendor. But how long does the effect last? And how do the veneers look after 10 years? These and other questions will be clarified in the following article.
Table of contents
Veneers durability
In general, it can be said that high-quality veneers have a very long durability. At some point, you will have to replace them, but in most cases this time comes after 10 years. Sometimes even after 20 years. This is due to the fact that they are made of very resistant materials and are very durable.
Veneers last a very long time compared to other methods. However, even they are not forever and will need refreshing at some point.
However, it is also clear that veneers will have to be renewed at some point. By grinding the teeth, you can’t just have them removed and live without them afterwards. This would cause enormous damage to the teeth and would have very negative consequences. After 10 years, however, the chances are very good that the veneers will not yet need to be replaced. More about the durability of veneers, can be read in our magazine.
Different veneers types after 10 years
However, the overall durability also depends on the type of veneers. Non-prep v eneers or lumineers rarely last longer than ten years. Because they are so thin, discoloration occurs more quickly and light can shine through them. Veneers-to-go also do not often last longer than 10 years. This is because they are created directly at the dentist’s office and not in the laboratory. As a result, they can have lighter deviations, which accordingly need to be repaired earlier.
At Inno Esthetics in Bochum, we recommend classic ceramic veneers in most cases. These are significantly more stable than the previous two examples. In addition, they are elaborately produced in the laboratory. This makes them very stable and the fit is also perfect. For these reasons, they also have the longest shelf life of up to 20 years. Therefore, if you choose this form of veneers, you rarely have to worry after 10 years.
Porcelain veneers can also last a very long time. It can take up to 15 years before they need to be renewed. However, the material is a bit more fragile than ceramics, which is why our advice always goes in the direction of classic veneers.
How do veneers look after 10 years?
Therefore, if the veneers are well maintained and no unforeseen incidents occur, it can be said that veneers after 10 years will look almost the same as on the first day. They discolor only minimally over time, hold their shape and even the glue still holds. The Hollywood Smile is therefore still intact even after several years and discolorations, misaligned teeth or gaps, are concealed. Only if you hold a picture from the first day, next to a picture after ten years, you may notice slight differences.
However, the whole truth is that after 10 years it should be decided together with the dentist how long the veneers can last. Unfortunately, they are not forever.
Ensure long durability of veneers
The preceding average figures regarding the durability of veneers, explicitly refers only to well-maintained veneers. If you handle them poorly, do not take good care of them or have them checked regularly, you can expect them to last much less time. But how can the duration be kept as long as possible?
The first step is to choose the right dentist. You can get high-quality veneers only from professional and experienced doctors. Of course, these also cost their price, but it is worth it enormously, because you can have them renewed at longer intervals. But it is not only for the insertion of the veneers that the specialist should be consulted. Regular check-ups are essential to ensure the durability of the veneers beyond 10 years.

Of course, regular and, above all, careful care of the veneers is also part of the process. Like everyone else, you should brush your teeth two or three times a day. However, the cost of the veneers should increase the motivation to clean and care for them even more than for other people. Reasonable oral hygiene can increase the durability of the veneers enormously.
Last but not least, you should always take care of the veneers. They are very stable and resistant, but you should not overuse them either. This is how you avoid damage, such as cracks or fractures when the load is too heavy. Opening bottles with crown caps, biting through threads or plastic straps and chewing on objects should therefore be refrained from.
Conclusion
Those who say that veneers last a lifetime and do not need to be renewed for decades are wrong in most cases. To maintain the perfect smile forever, further treatments are inevitable. However, this does not always have to be the case after ten years. Often a refresher after 15 or 20 years is sufficient, although regular consultation with the dentist is enormously important. After 10 years, veneers can still look very beautiful and be stable and undamaged.
